Heritage, Continuity and Purpose
The Royal House of Lusignan stands today as a custodian of the Lusignan dynastic tradition—preserving a remarkable inheritance whose documented history reaches from medieval France to Jerusalem, Cyprus and Cilician Armenia.
The medieval House of Lusignan is firmly established in history. From its origins in Poitou, members of the dynasty became Kings of Jerusalem and Cyprus, while the Lusignan name became intertwined with the Crown of Cilician Armenia. This extraordinary heritage forms the historical foundation upon which the contemporary House looks back.
Our responsibility, however, is not to romanticise or rewrite that history.
The later story of Lusignan dynastic continuity is more complex. The contemporary House preserves a genealogical and dynastic tradition through later Lusignan lines and the Lusignan–Kalfa Nar Bey succession, while recognising that aspects of this later history remain matters of scholarly and genealogical debate.
We believe historical integrity requires that distinction.
The Royal House does not claim governmental authority or territorial sovereignty over Cyprus, Jerusalem, Armenia or any other land historically associated with Lusignan rule. Historical titles and traditions are preserved within their dynastic, cultural and commemorative context.
Our purpose in the twenty-first century is therefore not to recreate the political world of our ancestors, but to preserve its heritage and translate its finest ideals into meaningful service.
The House maintains its Christian and chivalric traditions through historical preservation, scholarship, fellowship, charitable endeavour and its chivalric institutions. Their individual histories are respected and preserved without attempting to manufacture an artificial antiquity.
For us, chivalry must mean more than ceremony.
Faith. Honour. Loyalty. Charity. Courage. Justice. Mercy. Service.
A Royal House should ultimately be judged not simply by the crowns its predecessors once wore, but by the integrity with which it preserves their history and the good accomplished in their name.
We therefore welcome serious historical and genealogical scholarship. Where evidence confirms tradition, we celebrate it. Where evidence complicates tradition, we study it. Where questions remain unresolved, we acknowledge them.
We are not seeking to reclaim the kingdoms of the past. We are seeking to be worthy custodians of their memory.
Heritage is an inheritance. Service is its obligation.
To preserve history without falsifying it.
To honour Christian heritage through charity and service.
To respect the peoples and nations whose histories intersect with our own.
To encourage scholarship rather than fear it.
And to pass the Lusignan inheritance to future generations stronger and better documented than we received it.
That is the position of the contemporary Royal House of Lusignan.
